What is kidzdream?
Premises
The Cultural Association Dinamolab in the last few years has worked extensively with children for RAI (National Italian Television) other italian networks and international UN agencies like UNICEF, the World Wildlife Fund, producing news broadcasts for children and by children (like “Neonews”, “TG minimo”, “La Liberazione Dei Cortili” , Snonews ) and social awareness TV spots. Kidzdream has been born in 2009 in collaboration with UN WFP starting from these assumptions:
- How children can simply and strongly express themselves in front of a camera.Their own words and wording, their thoughts, facial expressions and body-language all contribute to a unique and child-like communication. This can only be achieved if the children feel at ease, when and where they are filmed and free from any conditioning, be it parental or at school or from the media itself.
- Theauthenticity of children’s ideas is a unique antidote to popular media stereotypes and predictability. All their ideas, even when reproducing “grown-up” stereotypes, stem from the subconscious, with an inevitable ironic detachment and spontaneous honesty, so that everything from their perspective is a reflection of their healthy, yet different vision.
These experiences have already taught us two fundamental things:
Children and the art of recounting dreams
Our experience in the field has shown us that a privileged fast track of communication opened up between us and children when we asked them to talk about which dreams they remembered most or preferred remembering.
These children – between 6 and 12 years old – willingly described their dreams in great detail and seemed to adopt a more mature and comprehensive manner of speaking, considering they were recalling some complex situations and stories from their own personal world of dreams.
This was why we thought it interesting to enable children to tell us what they dream about when they sleep. After considering the television media as a possible communication tool (an idea which we put on stand-by) we decided that recounting these dreams through the WEB was the most immediate and so, appropriate.
The web site: Maps, movies, drawings
This website follows our Artefacta format, with maps and short films of children recounting their dreams. The navigation starts from a world map composed using parts of the drawings made by children. By clicking the different cities you open a short movie menu. In the movie the kids after telling their dreams also show a drawing that illustrates it.
The drawings
These drawings shown in the interviews will also contribute to an illustrative fantastic archive to help understand and explore dreams further.
Language and sub-titles
Dreams should be recounted in the children’s own mother-tongue so as not to lose any of their natural spontaneity. It is in fact essential that children feel completely at ease when recounting their dreams by using their own words, signs, smiles, and unique body language. Consequently the website will have sub-titles in various languages to engage any navigator, leaving the original impact of the communication intact.
Web administrators: an active and constant filter
There will be no direct access, blog or other social networking provisions for this website. All potential website content is submitted to a decision-making board of experts.
Schools and other children’s locations: the micro reportages
Interviews can take place in either schools and/or other places where children play or meet, including where they live.
A further contribution from the children could come in the form of a reportage made by themselves, as baby journalistsabout their location.
KidZdream a way for children around the world to help each other
This is an essential element of the whole project whereby all the children that participate in recounting their dreams, wherever they are in the world, should be aware of taking part in a project where they can potentially help other children in need.
KidZdream missions: Campaigns for Children
KidzDream can also join international projects for larger organisations to support campaigns with specific children-friendly aims: like promoting access to education campaigns, or contributing to building schools or football pitches, to buy toys etc. For a specific period the campaign itself can become a Kidzdream main objective through targeted communication and fund-raising.
KZ supporters. How VIPs help KIDZDREAMS
Politicians, Famous actors, artists, writers and public personalities of all sorts can tell us their dreams to help promote the campaign. Adults and their dreams are not included in the Childrens Multimedia Map but appear on the website. Staffan De Mistura UN Special Envoy for the Syria Crisis, Pietro Grasso President of the Italian Senate, the Mayors and former Mayors Leoluca Orlando, Giuliano Pisapia, Massimo Cacciari, Walter Veltroni in addition to the former Minister Massimo Brai, Francesco Antinucci, Fabrizio Plessi, Paolo Bonolis are all already KZsupporters.
How to make KIDZDREAM
Preparation
The children are asked to concentrate on a dream they remember best or that they prefer. They are also asked to think about the various details involved: possible locations, colours, people etc. They are then asked to draw a representation of their dream.
Dreamboxes
These are very simple “talking heads” type short films with a fixed camera and with blackboards often as background. This should result in a series of short 60-120 second interviews of children recounting their dreams with their own words and gestures: be it their favourite, or scariest or the one they remember best. At the end of this interview they show and describe their drawing.
